About 2D-3D Animation

2D and 3D animation is taking the commercial industry by storm. More and more companies are turning to 2D and 3D animation as an alternative to filming a live action commercial. There are a variety of reasons for this; animation catches the eye, you don’t have to pay union actors, sometimes it’s less expensive compared to a large production and you aren’t limited by pesky things like gravity or physics. Essentially 2D and 3D animation lets you create whatever you want in your mind and bring it to reality. Well, it’s a little more complicated than that.

What exactly is 2D Animation?

2D animation is animating flat 2D objects to add some flair to your commercial. Almost every commercial has a form of 2D animation in it, whether it’s a simple title animation or a complex talking dinosaur. Sometimes it can even make up the entire commercial, as you can see in the commercial we made for Insect Defend Patch. That’s a prime example of 2D animation being used for a commercial production. We’re able to create a single camera movement that flows throughout the various scenes in the commercial without having to resort to straight cuts or changing angles like we would had to have done if the commercial had been filmed. 2D animation can also be used in combination with filmed video. This adds movement to any static shots, spices up stock images, and gives any logos or text life to draw the attention of the viewer. Once you see what’s possible with 2D animation, it’s hard to resist using it in every video!

Is 3D Animation better than 2D?

Both 2D and 3D animation are powerful graphic tools to enhance the visuals of any video and draw the attention of your viewers. 3D animation gives a different feel than 2D animation but isn’t any more or less powerful. It can be used in the same ways as 2D animation; you can create an entire commercial from scratch, as we did with Group Dudes, one of post-production’s favourite commercials. You can also use 3D animation to enhance a video like we did with the logo in Syndicate Mortgage’s corporate video. This animation lets you create more realistic objects that can interact with a 3D environment or even a filmed environment in a way that feels more natural to the viewer than it would with 2D animation. 3D animation also gives a more modern look to your commercial since everything nowadays tends to be “3D”. The biggest difference between 2D and 3D animation is the time it takes to create. 3D animations require heavy computer usage, long render times and patience to fine tune and create the perfect 3D object or environment. While it may take longer to produce a 3D animation, the pay off is certainly worth it.
